Tip Out Calculator
Enter the night's tips and who worked. Split the pool by hours, by points, or evenly.
Total tipsTip Breakdown
6 hrs × $20.00/hr
5 hrs × $20.00/hr
4 hrs × $20.00/hr
Shares are rounded down to the cent. Leftover pennies go out one at a time, starting with the most hours, so the shares add up to $300.00.
How to use it
- Type the total tips for the shift.
- Pick a method: Hours, Points, or Equal.
- Tap a name to change it, and enter that person's hours or points.
- Read each person's total under Tip Breakdown. It updates as you type.
How the split works
Hours. The pool is divided by the total hours worked, and each person is paid that rate for their hours. With $300 in tips and 15 hours on the floor, the rate is $20 an hour.
Points. Each person has a number of points, usually set by role. The pool is divided by the total points and paid out per point. A server on 3 points takes three times what a busser on 1 point takes.
Equal. Everyone gets the same amount, whatever their hours.
When you do this every night
This page uses the same math as Tip Out, an iPhone app for restaurant and bar teams. The app saves each shift, remembers your roles, keeps cash and credit tips in separate pools, and can take a card fee off the credit pool first.

Questions
How do you split a tip pool by hours worked?
Add up everyone's hours. Divide the tip pool by that total to get a rate per hour, then multiply each person's hours by the rate. With $300 in tips and 15 hours worked, the rate is $20 an hour, so someone who worked 6 hours gets $120.
What is a points system for tip pooling?
Each role gets a number of points, such as 3 for a server and 1 for a busser. Add up the points for everyone on the shift, divide the pool by that total, and pay each person that amount times their points.
What happens to the leftover pennies?
A pool rarely divides evenly. This calculator rounds every share down to the cent, then hands out the leftover pennies one at a time, starting with the person who has the most hours or points. The shares always add up to the full pool.
Is this the same math as the Tip Out app?
Yes. It uses the same split and the same penny rule. The app adds saved shifts, role presets, separate cash and credit pools, a card fee setting, and a split by percentage.
Does this calculator save my numbers?
No. The math runs in your browser. Nothing you type is saved or sent anywhere, and closing the page clears it.
