Mixtape

Share music like it's 1995.

[ THE PROBLEM ]

Sharing music today is instant and disposable. You text a link, it gets a thumbs up, and it's forgotten by dinner. A mixtape used to be the opposite: hours of picking songs, a hand-drawn cover, and you had to physically hand it to someone.

I was born in 1981 and grew up making real mixtapes. You made one for your crush, then waited until school the next day to deliver it. The waiting was part of the gift. No music app captures that.

[ ABOUT ]

Remember when you'd spend hours picking the perfect songs for someone? Recording them onto a cassette, maybe decorating the case, writing out the tracklist by hand?

Mixtape brings that back. Pick songs from Apple Music, arrange them on Side A and Side B, design a cover, write some liner notes. Then send it to a friend.

They don't get it right away though. It takes 24 hours to arrive. Like waiting for a package. Anticipation is part of the experience.

[ HOW IT WORKS ]
01

Pick your songs

Search Apple Music and add tracks to Side A and Side B. Just like a real tape, each side holds about 45 minutes.

02

Make it yours

Generate AI artwork, choose a template, or upload your own. Pick a cassette color. Write liner notes to tell them why you chose these songs.

03

Send it

Find your friend by username and send the tape. They'll see it's coming, but can't open it for 24 hours. Then it's theirs forever.

[ KEY DECISIONS ]
01

Make people wait 24 hours, on purpose

You can't text someone a cassette. In real life you made the tape, slept on it, and handed it over the next day. The 24-hour delay recreates that. A few users asked why they couldn't send instantly; once I explained it, every one of them got it. The friction is the feature.

02

Launch on Product Hunt with zero expectations

I put Mixtape on Product Hunt knowing it's mostly a gimmick unless you have a team driving votes. It got featured, brought a couple of downloads and one or two mixtape purchases. I wanted the data point, not the dream.

[ RESULTS ]
10–15 downloads/weekwith no marketing push at all. It grows on its own while I focus on other products.
Featured on Product Huntwhich confirmed what I suspected: a launch without a team behind it is a data point, not a growth channel.
