Ripple News

Overview

Ripple News ("Ripple," "we," "us," or "our") is operated by JPM Inc. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your personal information when you use the Ripple News mobile application.

Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • Display name

Profile Information

During onboarding and through your profile settings, you may provide:

  • Location: City, state, country, and postal code, which you type in and select yourself. We also store the approximate map coordinates of the city you selected so we can match regional stories. Ripple never reads your device's location and never asks for location permission.
  • Professional information: Profession, job title, and employment type
  • Demographic information: Age range and life stage
  • Household information: Housing status, household type, and children's ages
  • Financial information: Income bracket and investment interests
  • Health information: General health considerations
  • Lifestyle information: Commute type
  • Content preferences: Topics of interest and story volume preferences

All profile information beyond your email address is voluntary. You choose what to share, and you can change your answers at any time in the app's profile settings. Some fields can currently be changed but not cleared back to empty; if you want a field wiped, email us or delete your account.

Usage Data

We collect information about how you use the app, including:

  • Stories you read
  • Stories you save
  • Ripple analyses you generate

Technical Data

We automatically collect:

  • Device type and operating system version
  • App version
  • Crash reports and performance data

How We Use Your Information

Personalized News Analysis

Your profile information is used to generate personalized "Ripple" analyses that explain how news stories specifically affect you based on your location, profession, financial situation, health considerations, and other profile details. This is the core function of the app.

Content Delivery

We use your topic preferences and location to help curate relevant news stories for your feed.

App Improvement

Usage data helps us understand how the app is used so we can improve the experience.

Third-Party Services

OpenAI

When you generate a Ripple analysis, your profile information and the relevant news story are sent to OpenAI's API to generate personalized analysis. This includes any health considerations, income bracket, and household details you have chosen to provide. OpenAI processes this data according to their API data usage policy, which states that API inputs and outputs are not used to train their models. For more information, see OpenAI's API Data Privacy.

Supabase

We use Supabase for authentication, database hosting, and serverless functions. Your data is stored on Supabase's infrastructure. For more information, see Supabase's Privacy Policy.

RevenueCat

We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions and verify purchases. RevenueCat receives an anonymous customer identifier and your subscription status. It does not receive your profile information. For more information, see RevenueCat's Privacy Policy.

OneSignal

We use OneSignal to send push notifications about new stories. OneSignal receives a push subscription identifier for your device and the notification topics you have opted into. For more information, see OneSignal's Privacy Policy.

PostHog

We use PostHog to understand how the app is used, such as which screens are opened and how many Ripples are generated. PostHog receives usage events tied to your account identifier. It does not receive your health, financial, or household information. For more information, see PostHog's Privacy Policy.

Sentry

We use Sentry to collect crash reports and performance data so we can fix bugs. For more information, see Sentry's Privacy Policy.

Google Sign-In

If you choose to sign in with Google, Google provides us with your email address and display name. For more information, see Google's Privacy Policy.

Apple Maps

When you type a city into the location field, that text is sent to Apple's map search service to return matching places. This happens on Apple's servers, not ours, and we only store the place you select.

News Sources

Ripple aggregates news from 11 publicly available RSS feeds: PBS NewsHour, BBC News, The Guardian, Axios, The Hill, Al Jazeera, ProPublica, The Intercept, Drop Site News, The Appeal, and The 19th. We do not share your personal information with these news sources.

Data Storage and Security

  • Your data is stored securely on Supabase's cloud infrastructure
  • All data transmission is encrypted using HTTPS/TLS
  • Authentication tokens are stored securely on your device
  • We use row-level security policies to ensure you can only access your own data
  • Server-side input sanitization is applied to all user-provided data

Data Retention

  • Your account and profile data is retained as long as your account is active
  • Cached Ripple analyses are retained for 7 days
  • News stories are retained for 7 days before being automatically removed
  • You can delete your account at any time through the app's settings. This permanently removes your account and all of your profile, saved stories, reading history, and Ripple analyses from our database.
  • Deletion does not retroactively erase records already held by our service providers. Anonymous usage events in PostHog, crash reports in Sentry, your push subscription record in OneSignal, and your subscription record in RevenueCat are retained under those companies' own retention policies. If you want those removed as well, email us and we will request it.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access your personal data through your profile settings
  • Update your personal data at any time
  • Delete your account and all associated data
  • Limit the personal information you provide (all profile fields beyond email are optional)

Children's Privacy

Ripple News is not intended for children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have collected information from a child under 13, please contact us immediately.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or via email. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy indicates when it was last revised.
